Total BS, Ideas that work.
Menu

Your smart home should just work.

You bought the lights. You downloaded the apps. Now you have six apps, three voice assistants that ignore each other, and lights that only know how to do rainbow mode. We fix that. Total BS programs smart homes in the Rochester area so everything responds the way you expected it to when you opened the box.

Sound familiar?

Six apps, no system. Govee for the lights, a different app for the thermostat, another for the plugs, Alexa for some of it and Google for the rest. Nothing talks to anything.

Lights that do one trick. You spent real money on smart lighting and it's stuck on the same color because the schedules never got set up and the scenes never got built.

The Home Assistant box someone set up and left. It worked for a while. Then an update broke a thing, or the person who built it moved on, and now it's a blinking light on a shelf.

Routines that almost work. The "goodnight" command turns off half the house. The porch light comes on at 7 PM in June and in December.

What we do

  • Smart lighting programming: Govee, Philips Hue, Lutron, LIFX, and most Wi-Fi or Zigbee lights. Scenes, schedules, sunrise and sunset timing, holiday color calendars, game-day effects.
  • Voice control that works: Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit set up so one command does the whole thing, in every room.
  • Home Assistant setup and rescue: new installs on dedicated hardware, migrations off a Raspberry Pi that's running out of steam, and repairs on systems someone else built.
  • Whole-home automation: lighting, climate, audio, plugs, shades, and the sensors that tie them together, with one dashboard on your phone and the wall.
  • Custom automations: if it has an app or an API, we can usually make it part of the system. Ask us about the Bills touchdown lights.

We work with the gear you already own first. We'll tell you if something needs replacing, and we'll tell you if it doesn't.

The Bills lights

Every time the Bills score, the lights in our house flash red and blue. The porch, the living room, the kitchen, the whole thing, for ten seconds, then back to normal. Neighbors text about it.

That's a 40-line automation reading a live score feed. It took an afternoon. It's the kind of thing you can do when the system under your lights is built right, and it's the reason we think home automation is more fun than the app-store version lets on.

For contractors and electricians

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy new lights?

Usually no. If you already have Govee, Hue, Lutron, LIFX, Wyze, TP-Link, or most Zigbee or Wi-Fi devices, we work with those. We'll be honest if something is too old or too locked down to play nicely.

What is Home Assistant?

Free, open-source software that runs on a small box in your house and talks to all your devices, regardless of brand, so you get one app and one set of automations instead of six. It's the most capable smart home platform there is, and the most frustrating one to set up without help. That's the part we do.

Will this work with Alexa, Google, or Apple?

Yes, all three. Home Assistant connects to each, so you can keep using whatever voice assistant you like.

Does my internet have to be up for the lights to work?

With Home Assistant, no. Schedules and scenes run locally. That's one of the main reasons we use it.

What happens if something breaks later?

Setup and Whole Home packages include training and documentation so you can handle the basics. The care plan covers updates, backups, and support if you'd rather not think about it.

Do you do security cameras or alarms?

No. New York requires a separate license for alarm, access control, and security camera installation. We'll integrate lighting with equipment you already have, and we can point you to licensed installers for the rest.

How far do you travel?

Monroe County and the surrounding area. Remote-only configuration is available for Home Assistant work anywhere.
