What does an IT consultant actually do for a small business?
An IT consultant helps you make technology decisions with the business in mind: which tools to keep, which to replace, and what is worth building. Most technology problems go sideways because nobody stopped to ask the right questions first. That is the job.
Typical engagements:
- Vendor and software decisions. Comparing point of sale, scheduling, CRM, or accounting tools against how your team actually works.
- Untangling what you already have. Mapping the accounts, subscriptions, domains, and logins your business depends on, and who controls them.
- Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace setup. Email, shared files, SharePoint, permissions, and security basics done properly.
- Process fixes. Finding the spreadsheet, copy and paste, or double entry that eats hours every week, and deciding whether it needs software or just a better routine.
- A second opinion. Reviewing a quote or proposal from another vendor before you sign.
How much does IT consulting cost?
Consulting and general IT work is $75 per hour, billed for actual time. Many questions are answered in one or two hours. For ongoing help, the support retainer includes 5 hours a month for $375.
How does it work?
- Free first conversation. Tell me what is going on. If it is not a fit, I will say so.
- Scope in writing. You get an estimate of hours and what you will have at the end.
- Do the work. Remote when possible, on site in the Rochester area when it matters.
- Leave you with notes. Decisions and settings are documented so you are not dependent on me.
Who is it for?
Owners and managers who want a senior perspective without hiring a full-time IT person or signing with a large agency. You work directly with the person doing the work.
Business and IT consulting: common questions
Is the first consultation free?
Yes. The first conversation is free and there is no obligation. It is usually 20 to 30 minutes by phone or video to understand the problem and whether I can help.
Do I need a retainer to hire you?
No. Most consulting clients start hourly at $75 per hour for a focused, time-bounded piece of work. A monthly retainer is available if you want regular help.
Can you review a quote from another IT company or developer?
Yes. Reviewing a proposal before you sign is one of the most valuable hours you can spend. I will tell you what looks reasonable, what is missing, and what questions to ask.
Do you work on site or remotely?
Both. Most work is done remotely, which keeps costs down. On-site visits are available in Rochester, Greece, and nearby towns in Monroe County when the job calls for it.
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
Small businesses and nonprofits, usually 1 to 25 people: restaurants and food service, trades, retail, e-commerce, and service businesses.
